Heat on govt to change pesticide laws

23 Jun, 2011 11:17 AM
AN ALLIANCE of consumer groups, medical officials and environmentalists is calling for an overhaul of Australia’s legal pesticides list.

A petition was signed by a number of groups, including consumer protection group Choice, the World Wildlife Federation (WWF) and the National Toxics Network, urging the government to urgently change current pesticide laws.

The Declaration for Safer Australian Pesticide Laws expresses serious concerns about the way pesticides are regulated in Australia and about the implications for human health and the environment.

And the push has attracted high profile support, with signatories including environmental crusaders Tim Flannery and Erin Brockovich; celebrity chefs Julie Goodwin, Ben O'Donohue and Teresa Cutter and horticulturalist and television presenter Peter Cundall.

The petition centres on the fact that pesticides that are still registered for use in Australia are no longer authorised in Europe, because of potential risks to human health or the environment.

"To say a chemical is unsafe in Europe but safe in Australia is like saying smoking causes cancer in Europeans but not Australians,” said WWF Australia spokesperson Juliette King.

The petition claims there are more than 80 registered pesticides in Australia that are banned in Europe, and that of these, 17 are suspected carcinogens.

And the petition has several crucial farm chemicals in the gun, including widely used herbicides such as paraquat and diuron.

There has been strong opposition to the petition from the farming and biotechnology sectors.

The National Farmers Federation (NFF) accused the petitioners of running a ‘scare campaign’, and said there was a distorted interpretation of the facts.

“A campaign being run by various health and consumer groups is inaccurately claiming that Australia is using unsafe pesticides in food production,” NFF Vice-President Duncan Fraser said.

“This is completely false – agricultural chemicals available for sale in Australia are subject to a world-class scientific risk assessment by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) that regulates how and where these chemicals can be used.

Mr Fraser said it was not comparing like with like when looking at what was banned in Europe, as there were different farming systems in place.

“For instance, making simple statements that chemicals are banned elsewhere doesn’t take into account the fact that the chemicals used in Australia may not be appropriate for overseas farmers.

“That can be due to differences in pests, weeds and diseases, differences in production systems, and differences in environmental conditions and is why a country-specific, science based system is required.”

Biotechnology advocate CropLife is also disappointed with the petition, labelling it ‘misleading and deceptive’.

It said that without careful use of chemicals, more than half of Australia’s food production could be wiped out.

CropLife’s chief executive Matthew Cossey said all chemicals in Australia had been tested according to Australian conditions.

“CHOICE only undermines its own integrity by suggesting that chemicals not available overseas should be removed from Australia’s market.

“Differences in product availability are often also due to the commercial decisions made by manufacturers and registrants. It is not a reflection on the health or environmental risks associated with a product.”

The pesticide rules that farmers have to comply with today are onerous and pedantic, in total contrast to some of the most lethal pesticides which can be bought at the supermarket, taken home with the groceries in the car full of kids and sprayed all over the kitchen and food being eaten, how about these WWF messiahs of purity start with the bleeding obvious before they go on an uniformed farmer bashing.

Out of my year-one class (1974) only 3 of us remain.

Coming from a farming family and community in central QLD, I have watched people I know die of a variety of cancers. This increase in cancers coincides with the introduction of chemicals into the local farming community.

Anyone that makes a living from the sale of these products is not going to shoot their cash cow. And who wants to stop the other cash cow: the Cancer industry? Just follow the money. And DDT was "safe" in Australia long after it was banned elsewhere. We are the dumping ground for banned products out of the US and Europe.

These people have more to worry about with what is now allowed to be imported by the Gillard Government straight to their markets.

Whilst Australian farmers face the some of the worlds most strict guidlines and restrictions on the use and type of Agricultural chemicals those who now are allowed to flood our market are not.

Gillard's Government are opening the borders and are not increasing Border security including testing of food quality and testing for chemical contamination.

They are wasting their time focusing on farmers they need to refocus on Gillard and what she is letting you eat.

These small vocal minority groups will have more to worry about soon as all food they will be able to buy will be imported as through their direct actions and that of the Gillard Government has done pandering to big foreign business and the vocal minority is putting Australian farmers out of business and bugger all young farmers coming into the Industry.

Why would they having to put up with an Anti Family farmer Government and having to fight every day vocal minority groups whose support base is from young brain washed Uni students?

Arsenic the period you mention is the same time our Government was helping England let off deadly nuclear bombs off in our back yard.

Check recently released data on where the fall out went. You will find it went right over most of Eastern Australia but for some reason the media has gone very quit on these facts

The types of bombs they where letting off at the end of their testing where some of the worst in history.

I also wonder why so many farmers and their families have got prostrate cancer and all other cancers. Testing of these bombs did not finish until the late seventys

You can live without chemicals, it is called management and working with nature.

We have been sold on production and no profit. Inputs are sending farmers out the back end and some of them are killing us.

Our regulators are focused on the interests of suppliers and not people. It is easier to get permits than it is to take them away.

I hope you like eating wild turnip, brome grass an paddy melons holisticmick, cause take away the chemicals and thats all this farm will grow.

And if you think I should plow them then I hope you like eating dust mate cause thats what will blow your way.

It's time that the farmers of Australia got together and unite because we are going to need all the strength we can muster to ward off the dogooders.
