$6600 Kogody Angus bull and 100pc clearance

13 Feb, 2012 02:00 AM
THE sun was shining on Chris and Julie Hockey's annual on-property Kogody Angus bull sale last week.

An increased offering of 25 rising two-year-old Angus bulls, up from 17 in 2011, was met with strong competition and solid prices.

Achieving a total clearance, an increased average of $4672 and a top price of $6600, smashing that of last year's $5200, there were smiles all round at the completion of the sale.

"I'd like to thank all of our buyers, I think they supported the sale very well and I am very happy with the prices," Mr Hockey said.

"It was a great crowd and a beautiful day for it."

Landmark auctioneer and sale co-ordinator, Neil Brindley, said he was also extremely happy with the outcome of the sale.

"The prices are up and in relation to the beef industry that wasn't unexpected but we are still pleased with the outcome," Mr Brindley said.

"There has been no expense spared in the genetics of the Kogody bulls and this was seen in the offering."

Kogody WBP C142 was the first of the Kogody offering and was a quality bull with meat in all the right places.

The crowd wasted no time in waving their hands to start the bidding on this superior animal and it was eventually knocked down for $5600 to Neil Wandel, Willowaup Farms, Esperance.

This bull had EBV figures showing an impressive eye mucsle area of +4.5 and a scrotal size of +1.5.

But it was the next bull to go under the hammer that had everyone talking, even before the sale started.

This quality bull, Kogody WBP F72, came in the top one per cent for weight in WA and impressed everyone with its above average EBVs.

It had a birthweight EBV of +6.2, a carcase weight of +65 and its 200, 400 and 600-day weight figures were all well above average and when it walked into the ring its superior frame and conformation didn't disappoint.

Kogody WBP F72 was sired by BT Right Time 24J and out of Kogody WBP Z131 and was born on April 4, 2010.

Wes Graham, WJ & SJ Graham, Esperance, was quick to see the quality genetics this bull possessed and eventually secured him for the top price of $6600.

Mr Graham, who is a long-time buyer of the Kogody genetics and runs about 1800 Angus breeders, said the bull was a good even type.

"I was initially impressed with his EBVs, which were better than average, and he is a good size and is well muscled," Mr Graham said.

Also willing to pay solid prices for the Kogody bulls was Russell Yench, RL & CI Yench, Coomalbidgup.

Mr Yench proved to be a good judge and worked his way through the catalogue to secure a team of three paying $5200, $4800 and $4600.

But it was CD & DD Barratt, Esperance, who were the volume buyers on the day and unwilling to part with any of their selected Kogody bulls, kept the bids coming to take home four.

The Barratt family selected a group of well-muscled bulls with a good stretch which were secured for an average of $4300.

Also taking more than one was GBT Spencer, Esperance, who paid $4600 and $4400 and WM & DK Vandenburghe, Esperance, paying $4000 and $4800.

Hargate Park, Esperance, also bought two for $4600 and $5000 along with Shepwok Downs ($4200 each).

Willing to pay a solid price to secure the Kogody genetics were L & K Mclean, Esperance, who paid $5200 for a good-sized, fleshy bull, as did Esperance Downs Research Station paying the same price.
